He was privately educated by his widowed mother, and attended Church Hill preparatory school at Crondall near Fareham, Hampshire, before entering Marlborough College in 1893.〔Article by Giles C. Watson.〕 He entered Exeter College, Oxford, where he graduated BA in 1901 and MA in 1904.
